The Scots pine

Listen to the information here!

Last but not least, I will present you the only species of resins on this theme trail.

The Scots pine or scientific Pinus sylvestris.

Due to its uses, from an ecological point of view and the quality of the wood, the foresters have enriched the Dumbrava Sibiului Forest with this valuable species as well.

Compared to other species of pines, you can easily recognize it by the scarlet color at the top of the stem.

The needles have lengths ranging from 3 to 7 cm, are arranged two by two in a sheath, pricking and slightly twisted.

The cones have at maturity 3 to 7 cm, where you can find seeds of 3 to 5 mm, from which the next generations of trees will be born.

My buddy, the Scots pine is a pioneering species, not being picky about the conditions in which it grows, being successfully used for planting degraded land.

Did you know that...

  • A Scots pine can live up to 600 years.

  • In our country there are also other species of pines, such as: Banatian black pine (Pinus nigra), Weymouth pine (Pinus strobus), mountain pine (Pinus mugo) etc.

  • The European larch (Larix decidua) is a species of resinous that in autumn loses its needles and due to the quality of the wood it is also suggestively called „the oak of the resinous”.
