How dead wood gets recycled?
In front of you, you have an old oak tree at the end of its existence, with portions of dead (dry) wood. To help recycle dead wood, beetles and mushrooms appear, creatures that feed on this wood.
One of the species of beetles that feed on oak wood is the Oak cerambyx or scientifically the Cerambyx cerdo.
Cerambyx cerdo is an insect, 35 to 55 mm long, black with brown shades and long antennae.
Adult beetles can be observed from May to June and are active during the night.
The female lays 2 to 3 eggs each in the cracks or wounds of the bark, and after about 14 days the larvae appear, which at first feed on bark, then penetrate into the wood where they form long galleries in the wood, with large and oval openings.
The growth period of the Oak cerambyx is between 3 – 5 years.
Did you know that...
The oak cerambyx is included in the Red Book of the Republic of Moldova and Lithuania, Ukraine, Belarus and in the Red List of the IUCN.
The presence of the oak cerambyx also indicates the natural and ancient character of the forest.
The oak cerambyx has a key role in forest ecosystems being a creator of micro ecosystems, pollinator and food for insectivorous species.
